When the new MGMT album Congratulations came out a last Tuesday, to say I was really excited would be a vast understatement. Their previous album Oracular Spectacular was a masterpiece and I was expecting much the same from their newest effort. However, the duo definitely took their sound in a new and dramatically different direction and after the first listen through I wasn't entirely certain how to react, but words like boring, confusion and astonishment came to mind. I flat out did not like it.
However, this one is turning out to be a slow burn - with each subsequent listen, I like it more and more. They really "explore the space" on this one and it reminds me of the last few songs on Oracular, which were really out there; hell, Siberian Breaks is an opus of sorts that meanders around for almost 13 minutes. If you are a fan of MGMT, definitely don't dismiss this one off hand after the first listen, as it really grows on you and you can start to see how the album flows together after a few listens. Flash Delirium has been out for a while so below is another song off the new 9 track LP for your listening pleasure:
